Dozens of protesters were arrested in Hong Kong on Thursday during anti-government protests that occurred as mainland China celebrated National Day of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Thursday’s arrests come as Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam and riot police continue to enforce the PRC’s “National Security Law,” which bars protest activity considered subversive. Protesters reportedly gathered in opposition to the law, which was enacted on June 30, and also demanded the return of 12 Hong Kong people, who were arrested in August while attempting to flee to Taiwan and extradited to mainland China. Local accounts indicated that hundreds of Hong Kong riot police patrolled the city, searching and detaining any individuals deemed as suspicious. Overall, however, Thursday’s protest gatherings remained minimal. On Wednesday night, Hong Kong riot police reportedly arrested five individuals for encouraging participation in Thursday’s protests. Chief Executive Lam announced a “return to stability,” despite continued tensions in Hong Kong as many protesters seeking to organize, rebuke Hong Kong’s administration, and demand autonomy. Both the National Security Law, which puts a severe limitation on any protest activity, and safety restrictions put into place against the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have prevented a significant continuation of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Despite a previous massive slowdown of the Hong Kong protest movement amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the new national security law could potentially cause a significant uptick in regular protest activity; however, protests against the new law are limited and have not yet sparked consistent significant civil unrest. In addition, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will continue to discourage public demonstrations.
