On Tuesday, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore claimed the increase in gun violence and homicides in the city have in large part been driven by the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. According to the Police Chief, factors such as economic hardships and social issues have affected the response effort to interrupt the cycle of violence. Chief Moore also reported that due to the closure of bars and clubs, party houses have become the new norm, leading to increased reports of spontaneous violence. Additionally, pandemic-related mandates have barred visitors from local hospitals, preventing trained violence intervention workers from visiting victims. The barring of intervention workers has diminished the opportunity to provide resources and emotional support. As of September 5, homicides were up 13.7 percent in Los Angeles, compared with the same time last year, while the number of shooting victims was up 8.2 percent, according to the latest figures. However, the rise in shooting victims and homicides comes amid an overall 5.6 percent drop in violent crime in the city.
