On Sunday, authorities in Georgia arrested 48-year-old Daniel Corwell of Atlanta, GA after police responded to disturbance calls at Clairmont Terrace Condominiums, located in DeKalb County, of a man throwing pipe bombs off his balcony. According to reports, when police arrived at the scene, Corwell “barricaded himself in the apartment and claimed to have planted devices all over the complex.” Police were able to take Corwell into custody without further incident; however, officers were called back to the scene after residents of the complex discovered pipe bombs in the courtyard of the condominium. The DeKalb County bomb squad was then called to the scene and discovered at least five additional IEDs, described as pipe bombs, on the property. Corwell remains in police custody and is currently being charged with possession and manufacturing of an explosive device, in addition to “aggravated assault on a public safety officer, reckless conduct, obstruction of officers, and impeding or interfering with a person enforcing littering laws.” Sunday’s incident in Atlanta, GA comes in the midst of a dynamic threat environment in which the use of IEDs in attacks have become increasingly more common in the U.S. IEDs have become an increasingly used tactic by extremists and terror groups, many of which provide guides to their extremists on how to manufacture them. Pipe bombs are one of the most widely used IED in the world, especially in the U.S. This is primarily because of their versatility, simplicity, and wide applicability to a variety of violent extremist agendas. The FBI believes that attempts to manufacture IEDs will likely increase in the coming years due to the easy access to explosive materials and IED instruction guides online.
