Yesterday afternoon, six people were killed in a deadly shooting that took place in a residential neighborhood in Jersey City, New Jersey. Official reports say at approximately 12:00pm local time, authorities were notified of a shooting taking place at Bay View Cemetery in Greenville, NJ that led to the death of 40-year-old Detective Joseph Seals of the New Jersey Police Department (NJPD). According to reports, the unidentified gunman then drove a stolen rental van to the area of JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive, NJ where they continued firing at responding officers. Officials say hundreds of NJPD officers as well as personnel from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) immediately responded to the scene. Following an hour-long standoff, five bodies were identified inside the grocery store, two of whom officials believed were the gunmen. Official reports say two other police officers were wounded in the shooting but were later released from a local hospital. Additionally, police also removed what they described as a possible “incendiary device” from the stolen rental vehicle and sent it for examination by a bomb squad, however its connection to the shooting remains unclear. All lockdowns for schools in Jersey City and in nearby schools were lifted at 4:15pm local time. While the motive for the shooting is unclear, City Public Safety Director James Shea confirmed that authorities “believe the bloodshed was not an act of terrorism” and that it was still under investigation.
