FACT 1: An EV vehicle stores less ‘juice’ when temperatures are low.
FACT 2: An EV uses more electric charge when travelling up hill.?
FACT 3: Driving downhill can add extra charge to the battery, as you drive.
The fact that on our next leg of the electric journey, from Logro?o (capital of Rioja wine production) to Soria, took us up and over the snow-capped and chilly mountain range known as Sierra Cebollera made our journey tense and potentially disastrous…
“OMG! We’re running out of juice quickly!”?
“We’re not going to make it!”
“What happens if we run out of charge up here in the middle of nowhere?”
“We’re down to the last 25%!”?
“Why did you choose this nightmare route?”
Clear signs of range anxiety and panic started kicking in and we were fortunate to get over the top in time, rolling downhill gently into the E. Leclerc garage of Soria, with 15 kms to spare. Relief. Pure relief.

Followed by joy. Joy at then driving along the next leg of the journey, with a bright blue sky and bright warming sun above us, and a fully recharged car. Driving now through the land of my ancestors, drinking in with our eyes the expanse of land and history, where generations of my father’s family once lived. A long, long time ago. Celtibereans and Romans. Warriors, soldiers, generals, farmers, carpenters and builders.
It felt strange. I said to Jane, “It’s like drinking a whole pint of ‘soul juice’, in one single gulp.”
