Committed to bringing innovative products to market, offering quality product education and superior customer service
The poet Mattie Stepanek once stated “When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” So, when?Michael Hennes, Associate Principal/Lighting Designer at Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design, Inc.?came up with a lighting concept for the newly renovated Moynihan Train Hall he turned to Enterprise Lighting Sales to make it come to life.?
Working with?Alex Demidovich of Enterprise Lighting Sales and Ken Yarnell at Scott Architectural Lighting, Michael outlined his concept for the 9th Ave entrance hall, which entailed large metallic domes lining the ceiling with color-changing light.
With extensive experience in large-scale custom luminaires, Ken Yarnell, General Manager of Scott Architectural Lighting, got to work with his in-house team to decipher how they would make Michael’s concept a reality.?
This?7’ Shallow Conical aluminum shade?(nicknamed the Flying Saucer in the shop), was built from (4) large quarter panels, using a standing seam joint which is concealed on top by ribs. The shade was finished using a low-gloss jewel shimmer metallic which would reflect the lighting provided by the 72W ea RGBW35 eldoLED. The central lighting column houses the DMX drivers and a suspended 14” Diameter Bowl, topped with an acrylic dome to “blend” the light. DMX interface is on the top of the fixture.?
The shade is supported by (4) adjustable AC cables and the center lighting column is separately supported by an AC cable.?The lighting is controlled with 4 circuits per fixture. Each fixture can be individually controlled to create hundreds of “looks” to provide the option for a?programmable “show” of changing colors and patterns.
A unique detail is the chrome stem, which reflects the light in both directions, eliminating shadows and subtly bending into the background of the shade.?
As for installation, Scott Architectural made it simple by shipping the lighting column separately which was installed using quick disconnects for power and control.??

The Moynihan Train Hall is the new home of Amtrak in New York City and was done in partnership with the Empire State Development (State of New York). It is a world-class intercity and commuter passenger boarding concourse for Amtrak and MTA Long Island Rail Road passengers. The facility combines the grandeur of the original Penn Station with state-of-the-art technologies and customer amenities. Highlighted by 92-foot-high skylights, the facility provides upgraded ticketing and baggage services; a new, upgraded Metropolitan Lounge (formerly Club Acela); a new reserved customer waiting room with restrooms accessible only to ticketed customers.?
All-in-all the?collaboration between designer-agency-manufacturer?was a resounding success and is truly a successful and wonderful result.
