Getting to that coveted first page of the search results is essential for any SEO program. The click through rate of a first page listing versus a third is drastic. The journey from third to first page for a specific keyword begins with a solid SEO strategy.
Check Out What’s Above You
Search engine results are
a mix of small businesses, informational pages and the mega behemoths like
Amazon, Walmart and Home Depot. Google the search term you want to rank better
for and see what’s on the first page. If it’s mostly small businesses and
information pages, then you’ve got a good shot of moving up. Check out what
they’re doing and compare it to your own SEO efforts. Try to understand why they’re ranking above
you.
If it’s behemoths, then it
might be more difficult. Behemoths have the pages, the authority and the money
to solidify their spots. The good news is as long as there is one spot on the
search page that’s not a behemoth, then you’ve got a shot and it’s not
impossible to rank above them.
Optimize Your Website
Google is looking for
pages that have authority for their searchers because it wants them to have the
quality results. The best way to organically provide authority is content. If
you want to rank for specific keyword,
then use it in blog posts, articles and other content throughout the website.
Be careful not to overdo it as Google may think you’re spamming keywords.
Overall Website Improvements Help Rank
It’s not just specific
keyword usage that helps rank. Make sure your website is mobile friendly and
mobile optimized. Work to get your pages to load as fast as possible and
include schema markup to help Google put context to the information. Develop
high quality backlinks from trusted sources.
