UK Storage Methods

In the UK removal industry, various storage methods are available to suit different needs. Each method comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, which can depend on factors like cost, convenience, and the nature of the goods being stored.

Here’s a look at the most common storage methods used in the industry:

1. Containerised Storage

Containerised Storage is one of the most widely used methods in the UK removal industry, where items are packed into large containers (wooden or steel) and stored inside a specialist warehouse.

Standard 250 cuft Storage Container

Advantages:

Cost-Effective: This can be a more cost effective option, especially for long-term storage.

Secure: Containers are sealed and kept in secure warehouses, often with limited access, CCTV, and alarm systems.

Minimal Handling: Once items are packed in containers, they are not usually unpacked or handled again until delivery, reducing the risk of damage or loss.

Climate Control: Many facilities offer climate-controlled containers, making it suitable for sensitive items such as Pianos, Wine, Antiques etc.

Disadvantages:

Limited Access: Most companies will charge for access per container, which will be on a pre agreed date with the client and will increase costs.

Longer Retrieval Time: Getting access to stored items will require advance notice, as the containers will need to be retrieved and placed in a safe area for access.

2. Self-Storage Units

Self-storage units allow customers to rent a space in a facility where they can store and access their belongings at their convenience.

Advantages:

Easy Access: Generally, clients can access their storage unit whenever they want, making it convenient for those who may need to retrieve items at short notice.

Flexibility: Self-storage units come in various sizes, allowing customers to choose the right one for their needs, from a few boxes to large furniture.

Independence: Customers can store and organise their items however they like without needing assistance from the storage provider.

Short-Term or Long-Term Options: Self storage contracts are usually flexible, with options for short or long-term rentals.

Disadvantages:

Higher Costs: Self-storage is generally more expensive than containerised storage, especially for longer term needs.

Labour: Clients need to handle the packing, loading, and unloading of their items.

3. Conventional Storage

In some cases (not so often these days), goods are stored in open warehouse spaces and covered with dust sheets, perhaps on pallets or in specific areas designated for each client.

Advantages:

Cost Efficiency: For larger volumes of items, this can be a cost effective solution, especially for businesses.

Scalability: Conventional storage can accommodate large, irregular shaped, or bulky items that may not fit into containers or self-storage units.

Disadvantages:

Limited Access: Like containerised storage, accessing items stored in a warehouse will probably require advance notice, comer at a cost and may not be as quick or convenient as self storage.

Increased Handling: Items stored conventionally may need to be moved multiple times, which increases the risk of damage or loss.

4. Palletised Storage

Items are packed onto pallets, shrink-wrapped, and stored in a warehouse on pallet racking. This method is often used for commercial storage, but certain companies also apply this method to household goods.

Commercial Palletised Storage

Advantages:

Efficient for Businesses: Palletised storage is ideal for companies needing to store equipment or supplies off site in an organised manner.

Maximises Space: Palletised systems allow for efficient use of vertical space, reducing the overall storage footprint.

Easy Access for Businesses: With a forklift system, pallets can be easily moved in and out of storage, making it convenient for commercial clients.

Disadvantages:

Not Ideal for Small Quantities: Palletised storage is usually more suited for bulk items and may not be cost effective for smaller quantities.

Limited Access for Individuals: Like containerised storage, retrieval can be time consuming, and access will probably require scheduling.

Some Factors to Consider When Choosing a Storage Method:

1.????? Access: How often will the client need to access their stored goods?

2.????? Type of Items: Fragile or sensitive items may need climate controlled environments (I visit a company that specialises in high class Piano Storage where they have a carpeted and climate controlled room).

3.????? Duration: Long term storage may favour containerised storage, while short term storage might lean towards self storage.

4.????? Volume: Large volumes may be better suited for containerised or conventional storage, while smaller loads can be efficiently stored in self storage units.

5.????? Budget: Some storage methods, like self storage, tend to be more expensive than others.

Each storage option has strengths depending on the specific requirements of the client and the nature of their goods. Matching the right storage solution to these needs helps ensure that the service is efficient, cost-effective, and secure.

There are two Quality Standards relating to the above:

BSEN 14873:2005 – Storage of Furniture and Personal Effects for Private Individuals

And

BSEN 15696:2008 – Self Storage Specification for Self Storage Services

If you’re interested in these or any other Standards, I’d strongly recommend contacting David Woodhouse at Quality Service Standards Ltd the Industry specialists, for more information and a tailored quotation
