After 8 and a half hours in my car today... to do what should've only been a 2 hour journey, where I missed turning up for my meeting, didn't eat or drink, use the facilities... Not best pleased. M62, you are the bain of my life. And whilst I'm grateful I wasn't involved in the accident, and I really do appreciate that I did make it home, it has been a long day. That being said I hear the M6 was in the same shape. And when I got home, the centre of my home town was also closed due to an accident. The world has ground to a stop... or has it?
So, the thing is, that despite being in my car all day (actually felt like weeks), and berating my sat nav for not giving me the heads up to avoid said delay, everything still happened. I made all of the calls I had scheduled, we ran the meeting remotely over video (I was dialled in) and by the end of today the only thing not achieved to date is a large glass of wine and an early night!
I remember the days of printing out pages and pages of directions to go to meetings, I had a ream of paper on my front seat with post-it notes separating each location! There was no sat nav. There was no mobile on hands free. There was you and your car, and if the traffic was bad you put up with it and the meeting got cancelled - you achieved nothing. It was just a write off. Today - we just get on. It doesn't mean any of us like a traffic jam - but we can still do what we need to do. So thanks to technology for not making today a write off. And I'm thinking next time this happens there's an opportunity for anyone with a burger van to get in place. And as a day at work goes, at least the views were lovely.

5 年Very relatable story, I guess we’ve all been there, for some, far too often.

5 年Great read Jenny Perkin. Being in the car is no longer 'dead time'. Never any funny being stuck in traffic though!
