Moving to New Orleans soon? The first thing you need to ask is: What do I want within walking distance of my home?
Why? Because similar to many East Coast cities, a lot of New Orleans is walkable. In fact, long term residents of New Orleans often spend most of their time in their own general neighborhood because every area has its own grocery stores, lunch, brunch and dinner spots, as well as parks and more.
the CBD and Lakeview have more access to luxury amenities. The CBD is more metro, with far more concrete than green space, while Lakeview has a quieter vibe.
The 7th Ward, Marigny and 9th Ward have more music, arts and authentic New Orleans eateries. The 9th Ward remains further behind other parts of the city in terms of post Katrina recovery and development, though that is changing in recent years.
Gentilly and New Orleans East are very residential focused, with larger yards and more often these homes have private driveways.
Uptown and Treme are the opposite. Yards are smaller, more homes require street parking with small driveways for some. Uptown has more shops and restaurant strewn about than most other parts of the city. Treme has more restaurants and museums than shops.
So the question is, which of these environments meets your comfort? your needs? your desires?
