Moving The Needle On Value Based Care: NAACOS Edition

Moving The Needle On Value Based Care: NAACOS Edition

As I prepare to travel to Baltimore tomorrow for the NAACOS spring conference , I am left to reflect on how far we have come and yet how much further we have to go as a nation as we transition how our healthcare system functions through a valued based care lens. Lets take a quick trip down memory lane.

Value-based care, a healthcare delivery model that rewards providers for quality and efficiency rather than volume, emerged in the early 2000s. Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) became a key strategy to implement this model. Launched by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2010, ACOs are groups of healthcare providers who come together to coordinate care for their Medicare patient population.

The ACO model incentivizes providers to deliver preventive care, reduce hospital admissions, and improve overall patient outcomes. By working collaboratively, ACOs can potentially generate cost savings for the healthcare system. The program has seen significant growth, with the number of ACOs in the US ballooning from a handful in 2010 to over 1,000 by 2022 generating billions of dollars in medicare savings in aggregate. This rapid expansion reflects the increasing adoption of value-based care principles and the potential for ACOs to deliver on the promise of better quality care at a lower cost.

I go into much more depth on the history and future forward of ACO's in this article https://medeanalytics.com/blog/the-imperative-of-value-based-care/ .

While great progress has been made we have a long ways to go. I know we will hear more about AI and its potential in helping organizations achieve positive outcomes at NAACOS. Additionally many organizations still could benefit from a complete focus on the fundamentals. Recently Kimberly Lynch reminded me of a 10 year old Brookings Institute playbook that honestly still rings true today!

For more about nailing the fundamentals check our my article with MedeAnalytics an organization I am an Vice President with.

If you are going to NAACOS I would love to grab a cup of coffee and catch up. Please email me at [email protected] or text me 317-383-1006 to triangulate on a time and place to meet.

If you are not, I would love to schedule time with you to understand where your organization is at in your value based care journey and see how MedeAnalytics can help your organization with our products and services lower your cost of care while delivering world class outcomes!
