Moving into Movember
It’s Movember, (M for mustache and ovember for November), an annual month-long event when men are encouraged to grow mustaches in support of causes related to men’s health. A mustache, AKA face lace, bro-mo, cookie duster, lip foliage (or lip doily, rug, or toupée) lower brow, facial fur, caterpillar, and dozens of other nicknames, is a fascinating feature. No less a figure than Albert Einstein once said, “Since 99.362% of women love mustache rides, it seems only a fool would have a bare upper lip.” While that’s one Einstein statistic that’s disputable, mustaches have waxed (literally) and waned throughout human history.
They were waning in 2003 when two mates in an Australian bar decided to try to revive their popularity. But soon after Travis Garone and Luke Slattery found 30 men to join them, they took on the more serious purpose of calling attention to and raising funds for men’s health issues, specifically mental health and suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer.? More than two decades later, the work they began has funded over 1300 health projects around the world, has active members in about 20 countries, and claims “a headcount of over 6 million.”
They now have many Mo-sisters as well as brothers, and have stayed true to the values they started out with:?
