Moving for Marie Curie
Cycling by its definition is a solo enterprise. It is just you and your bike facing the road ahead. Although it is a gateway to meeting and exploring the world you pass through, much of the time it is just you and your thoughts.
As I head towards the 2,000 mile marker, I have been thinking more and more about why I am doing this. The seemingly unrelenting weather obstacles which have strewn the road (metophorically), have had me thinking more negatively than positively in recent weeks. I am not a quitter so I have been researching the motivations which push other cycle tourists along during difficult times. A few conclusions have been reached.
Firstly, no one is making me do this, so either I should stop or I should stop whining and start thinking more proactively. Leaning towards the second sentiment, the second conclusion reached is perhaps I should have more of a focus than mileage. As a big history enthusiast, with particular interest in the World Wars I have been reading up on landmarks and historical sights which I can visit on my route up through Austria and Germany. With my history interest piqued, I now have a list of monuments which I can indulge in. Very exciting!
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, the biggest motivation to keep me pedalling is if I were to do this trip in aid or something other than myself. Having led an essentially selfish life in London of making sure I have as much fun as possible I have been remiss in doing more to help others. This is my big opportunity to change that.
Marie Curie is a charity I have always been impressed by. Marie Curie nurses helped my Grandpa and his children (including Dad) through his finals days and nights from the comfort of his home. They make the worst days just a little bit better for those experiencing them. Having also visited their Hampstead hospice I saw for myself the kind environment the Marie Curie nurses create. I think nursing is one of the best professions there is and to help those with terminal illness can only be respected and supported through raising as much money as possible to insure Marie Curie can continue doing their great work.
I am, therefore, asking you to help Marie Curie, by sponsoring me, to reach my goal of cycling 3,000 miles solo and self-supported through Europe. My aim is to raise a pound for every mile cycled. I would really appreciate all and any donations. Motivational messages also welcome. Thank you very much to those who have already been very supportive and to those who hopefully will be!
