Moving from Managing Managers to being a Functional Manager

(continued sharing based on the Book - Leadership Pipeline)

This is the level of leadership that most people are not prepared for

Mature leaders have developed the following:

  • Empathy,
  • Judgement
  • Listening
  • Timings
  • Sources of information - formal and informal
  • Giving feedback without curbing creativity and ownership
  • Balancing Long term thinking and Short term thinking

As a functional manager, one must be grounded in the concept that their function exists to support the overall organizational objectives

5 Key Requirements

1. Mid term thinking  (3 - 5 yrs horizon)

2. Awareness levels of the highest order

3. Organizational Strategic Orientation

4. In-depth understanding of the Business Model

5. Inclusive thinking of all aspects of the functions - not only their strength areas

6. Supporting Organizational success instead of just functional Success

Feel free to add to the list from your experience...

Quite an elaborative inventory . We can add on the ability to appreciate role & responsibility of other functions. It's visible looking at the nature of cross functional coordination by a functional manager.
