Moving Forward Together: It’s “We the People” Who Make the Difference

Elections are defining moments. They hold up a mirror, showing us who we are as a country. Some people are celebrating and relieved, others are feeling disappointed or worried, and many are somewhere in between, wishing they hadn’t felt they had to choose “the lesser of two evils.” But wherever we stand, one truth remains: politicians are just one part of what makes this country great. It’s the people who truly make the difference.

I believe in the power of each of us to move forward with resilience, hope, and a sense of unity. We each have the opportunity and ability to make a meaningful impact. But how?

Take Time to Feel

Whatever emotions this election has stirred up for you, allow yourself to feel and observe them. These feelings are the result of being engaged and caring about our future. When we acknowledge our emotions from a place of greater awareness, we gain perspective. It helps us move into being the best version of ourselves, rather than feeling stuck in a particular feeling.

Keep an Open Heart and Mind

The diversity of viewpoints across the U.S. can be inspiring, even if they’re sometimes hard to understand. Moving forward isn’t about becoming entrenched; it’s about honoring the fact that everyone’s experiences and insights matter. When we engage openly with one another, we grow together in ways that lead toward good.

Put Your Values into Action

Elections come and go, but the impact we make as individuals is lasting. Act on the values and causes that are most important to you, especially those powered by love. Real change starts and ends with us.

Lean on Community

This morning, I’ve gained immeasurably by connecting with friends and my kids, and it won’t stop after today. Our communities are our greatest source of strength. Friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues remind us that we’re all in this together. It’s in these connections that we build the resilience and empathy needed to face challenges together.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…” These words, written in 1787, were chosen deliberately to convey that the Constitution derives its authority from the citizens themselves, not from any ruler, monarchy, or government elite. This was a groundbreaking assertion of collective self-governance and democratic ideals. As Americans, we share the responsibility and ownership of the nation’s future - a future that includes justice, liberty, and the pursuit of the common good.

At the end of the day, it’s we the people who create the real future of this country. It’s the kindness, courage, and dedication of everyday people that make a lasting impact.

Nancy, thank you for beautifully articulating how we can address our feelings in healthy way. A way that can connect to the invaluable relationships we have in front of us. Also, thank you for offering perspective. The impact we have on our community matters. For me, I feel humbled, and in a sense liberated, to focus my efforts and attention on making a small, consistent impact on my little town in Texas.
