Dear Friend,
Nonprofit work presents unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities for deep engagement and substantial personal growth. This edition highlights the importance of organizational benefits in hiring and emphasizes the role of intuition during the hiring process. We are dedicated to guiding you to career paths tailored to your unique skills and commitment to enacting meaningful change within the nonprofit sector.?
Job Insecurity?
Ted Bauer , in “Of Course Job Security Is Mostly Dead, But Its Demise Benefits A Bunch Of People (Good!) ” from Medium , states, “It’s harder out there to make ends meet, but the demise of job security can actually be a good thing.”
The article argues that job security has both challenges and benefits. Companies prefer job insecurity for flexibility, cost savings, and motivation. Employees benefit by job-hopping for higher earnings, making resume gaps less relevant.
Loyalty in the workplace now depends on good pay, quality assignments, and sometimes good management and team dynamics, but often it’s due to employees' fear of change. Executives don’t prioritize loyalty, nor do employees who focus on higher pay and career relevance. Post-COVID, loyalty has diminished as both sides prioritize financial stability over long-term employment.
Our Take On Job Security??
Keep your resume ready at least every quarter or yearly, and keep your LinkedIn updated, too.?
In the nonprofit sector, your finance team will hopefully share the Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) and the Statement of Activities (Income Statement). It would help if you were looking to see whether revenue on the Statement of Activities is trending down over quarters and years and whether cash reserves are being used and reduced over quarters and years on the Statement of Financial Position. If that is a longer trend, then expenses may need to be reduced for the long and short term of the organization's financial health. This may mean possible staff reductions or revenue increases, but historically, the former is used while the latter takes more time.?
Of course, reviewing financials is much more nuanced than this brief list, but it’s an excellent starting point for examining your organization's financial health.?
