Moving Forward: Exploring New Dimensions in Leadership and Job Satisfaction (#6-2025)

Dear Friend,

Nonprofit work presents unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities for deep engagement and substantial personal growth. This sixth in 2025 (#6-2025) edition highlights possibly re-engaging by making small, intentional changes to your routine that prioritize connection and creativity. Start by seeking collaboration opportunities, whether leading or joining a cross-departmental project or organizing a brainstorming session to solve shared challenges. These interactions foster camaraderie and innovation, reminding you of the impact of teamwork. Stepping away from your desk for a lunch break, a coffee chat, or a walk-and-talk with a colleague can also break the monotony and offer fresh energy. Finding community through networking groups or industry events can restore a sense of partnership and purpose for those working solo. By intentionally creating moments for connection and engagement, you can reignite your enthusiasm and motivation, transforming your experience at work.

Last week’s fifth in 2025 (#5-2025) edition highlights that quarterly reviews are vital for driving performance and engagement by providing timely, actionable feedback that keeps goals aligned, celebrates achievements, and identifies real-time improvement areas. Unlike outdated annual reviews, which often fail to address progress or adapt to changing priorities, quarterly check-ins foster more assertive communication and relationships between employees and managers, demonstrating investment in development and well-being. This regular cadence allows organizations to proactively address challenges like disengagement or burnout, creating a more agile, responsive, and engaged workforce while cultivating a culture of continuous growth and accountability.??

Getting Reengaged At Work?

Here is a summary of Rebecca Horan and Melissa Karz, MBA, PCC in their Harvard Business Review article, “Are You Checked Out At Work.”?

If you’ve mentally checked out at work and want to reconnect, it’s possible to reset and re-engage by making small, intentional changes to your routine. Start by seeking opportunities to collaborate. If you’ve been withdrawing, taking the lead on a small cross-departmental project or joining an existing initiative can help you reconnect with colleagues and find purpose in shared goals. Whether you’re brainstorming solutions to a shared challenge or testing out a new process, collaboration can reignite your enthusiasm and remind you of the impact you can make when working with others.

Another way to rebuild your energy is by creating space for creativity and idea-sharing. Hosting a casual brainstorming session or inviting a peer to join you for 15 minutes of problem-solving can open the door to fresh perspectives. Tools like virtual whiteboards or even a quick coffee chat can help you capture ideas without the pressure of formal meetings. These interactions foster innovation and reintroduce the camaraderie that may have been lost over time, leaving you feeling recharged and inspired.

Sometimes, stepping back from your usual routine can make a big difference. Taking a proper break—whether it’s lunch away from your desk, a coffee break with a colleague, or a walk-and-talk to discuss challenges—creates opportunities for connection that formal meetings can’t replicate. By intentionally carving out time for informal interactions, you can break free from isolation and return to your work with renewed focus and energy. These moments of connection, even if brief, remind you that you’re part of a larger team working toward shared goals.

For those working solo, finding community outside of your immediate circle can provide the support and inspiration you need. Joining a networking group, attending industry events, or engaging with other professionals facing similar challenges can help restore a sense of partnership and purpose. These communities offer opportunities to share ideas, celebrate wins, and collaborate on projects, allowing you to break free from the isolation that can come with working alone. You’ll find yourself more engaged and motivated in your work by taking deliberate steps to reconnect with others.
