Moving Forward: Exploring New Dimensions in Leadership and Job Satisfaction (#21)

Dear Friend,

Nonprofit work presents unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities for deep engagement and substantial personal growth. This twenty-first edition highlights taking a break as essential for maintaining your well-being. If traveling is unfeasible for various reasons, you can still enjoy a rejuvenating staycation.?

Taking a Break Seriously: Crafting a Perfect Staycation

Sometimes traveling isn't possible for various reasons, or you prefer to stay close to home. A staycation offers a perfect opportunity to relax and recharge without traveling far. This edition focuses on making the most of your time off by creating a fulfilling staycation experience. Just as building social capital, shared in our previous twentieth issue, is crucial for all workers (in-person, hybrid, and remote), planning a successful staycation involves cultivating relaxation, enjoyment, and personal rejuvenation at home. Here’s how you can make your staycation genuinely memorable:

  • Plan Themed Days: Create themed days such as "Spa Day," "Movie Marathon Day," or "Cooking Adventure Day." Set a schedule and gather everything you need to immerse yourself in the theme.
  • Create a Relaxing Environment: Declutter, add calming scents like lavender and play soft music to transform your home into a serene space. Set up a cozy nook for reading, meditating, or simply unwinding.
  • Unplug from Work: Inform your colleagues and clients that you’ll be on a break and send an out-of-office email response. Turn off work-related notifications to fully disconnect and relax.
  • Indulge in Self-Care: Treat yourself to home spa treatments such as facials, bubble baths, and DIY manicures. Practice yoga or meditation to recharge your mind and body.
  • Explore Local Attractions: Visit nearby parks, museums, or landmarks you haven’t explored yet. Take a leisurely walk or bike ride to enjoy your local surroundings.
  • Have a Culinary Adventure: Try cooking new recipes or order takeout from restaurants you’ve never tried. Have a themed dinner night, such as Italian or Mexican cuisine.
  • Engage in Creative Activities: Take up a new hobby, such as painting, gardening, or crafting. Join virtual classes or workshops to learn something new.
  • Connect with Loved Ones: Plan virtual meetups or game nights with friends and family. Have a picnic or barbecue in your backyard with household members.
  • Read and Watch: Catch up on books, movies, or TV shows you've wanted to read or watch. Set up a cozy movie night with popcorn and blankets.
  • Set Goals and Reflect: Use your staycation time to reflect on your personal goals and aspirations. Write in a journal, create a vision board, or set new goals for the future.

Taking a break doesn’t always mean traveling far. With some creativity and planning, you can have a refreshing and enjoyable staycation that leaves you feeling recharged and ready to tackle your daily routine.

Rebecca Zucker shares in their Harvard Business Review article, How Taking a Vacation Improves Your Well-Being, that “ A disengaged employee may be more expensive than one that actually quits. The bottom line is that employees will benefit mentally, physically, and spiritually from vacation. Employers will benefit as well. And making sure your people regularly take time off is critical to creating a more sustainable workplace with healthier, happier employees.“

Whether you go away or stay home, please take care of yourself.
