Moving Forward with Disability Awareness and Open Hands Foundation

At Open Hands Consultancy (OHC), we’re committed to helping people live with openness and inclusion, both personally and professionally. I’m thrilled to share that we’re now expanding our work to form the Open Hands Foundation (OHF), which will focus on Disability Awareness and other community initiatives. We’re currently in the process of setting up OHF as a non-profit organisation (NPO) to better serve these goals.

While nothing is finalised yet, I’ve entered into exciting talks with the Anglican Diocese of Natal about taking on the role of Disability Awareness Facilitator, and I’m also in discussions with a Swiss company that has asked me to be their ambassador for disability initiatives here in KZN. We’re still in the negotiation phase, but I’m optimistic about the impact these partnerships could have.

Recently, Open Hands Foundation & the Anglican Diocese of Natal sponsored Hole 6 at the Hilton Pre-Primary Golf Day, where we added a unique twist—golfers had to play with their non-dominant hand, and we banned the words "handicapped" and "stroke". It was a lighthearted challenge, but it helped illustrate some of the obstacles people with disabilities face every day. The reactions were incredible, with many players gaining a deeper understanding of those challenges.

For me, this journey began when my physiotherapist warned me after my stroke: “If you don’t stretch, your hand will stay clenched.” Over time, I realised my life was full of “clenched fists”—judgments, ego, and tight beliefs. Living with open hands became the foundation of my work, and it continues to drive the mission of OHC and OHF today.

If you’d like to know more about our work or get involved, I’d love to chat. Feel free to reach out at [email protected] or call me at +27 64 751 6707. Together, we can make a real difference.
