"Moving" Beyond Physical Clutter

"Moving" Beyond Physical Clutter

I’m currently in the middle of my third “sea and tree change,” and with that comes the inevitable process of clearing my house for the move. After moving multiple times —across cities and even countries—you’d think my home would be clutter-free by now. But here I am, on my third run to the op shop!

Accumulating Emotional Clutter

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to accumulate physical clutter? Whether you’re a passionate shopper (Temu lovers, beware!) or someone who picks up things along the way, clutter can sneak up on you. Before long, your space feels crowded, disorganised, and overwhelming.

The same thing happens with our emotional lives. No matter how hard we try to stay clear and focused, over time, we pick up emotional clutter—old feelings, unresolved experiences, and limiting beliefs that start to weigh us down. Like that forgotten box in the corner or the clothes never worn with the price tag still on, these emotions become deeply embedded, impacting our thoughts, reactions, and decisions.

Emotional clutter can show up in various ways:

  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Emotional reactivity
  • Lack of enthusiasm
  • Depression
  • Cynicism

?The Weight of Emotional Baggage

We all carry 'undercurrents' of unresolved emotional energy—anger, fear, resentment, and sadness—that have become so ingrained in us that we no longer notice how they shape our lives.

These hidden emotions form judgments and create our Shadow, the parts of ourselves we suppress or ignore.

The reality is that these emotions remain until we consciously acknowledge them, address them with compassion, and begin the process of healing.

Just as you would declutter your home, your emotional Self needs the same attention.

Emotional decluttering frees you from what no longer serves you, making room for clarity, peace, and growth.

7 Steps to Emotional Clearing

To fully declutter emotionally, I guide clients through a 7-step process designed to release accumulated emotional pain and make room for new experiences.

  1. Take responsibility Accept that the emotions you feel are your own. Often, they reflect unresolved past experiences. By owning your emotions, you empower yourself to change and stop reacting to old patterns.
  2. Identify what you are feeling Give your emotions a name—whether it's anger, sadness, disappointment, or confusion. Naming your emotions helps you understand and address them effectively. Be specific, and avoid ego-based language which can keep you stuck.
  3. Witness the feelings in your body Tune into your body and notice where you hold emotional tension. Often, emotions manifest physically. By simply acknowledging where you feel discomfort, you begin to release some of the emotional charge they carry.
  4. Express the emotion Whether through journaling, reflective writing or speaking out loud, allow your emotions to be expressed. This gives the feelings a voice and helps loosen their grip on your mind and body.
  5. Release the emotion Engage in physical activities or rituals that help release the emotions from your body. Walk, dance, or even hit a pillow—movement and rituals help detoxify emotional energy.
  6. Share the emotion Find someone who can listen empathetically without trying to solve your problems. The simple act of sharing can be incredibly healing.
  7. Celebrate and rejuvenate Once you’ve gone through the emotional clearing process, celebrate your Self. Acknowledge the courage and commitment it took to release those old emotional patterns. Whether it’s getting a massage or enjoying a special treat, reward yourself for the emotional work you’ve done.

How Coaching Can Help You Declutter Emotionally

Emotional clearing is not something we are typically taught, yet it is vital for personal growth and well-being.

Coaching provides the structure, support and guidance needed to help you identify, process, and release emotional clutter in a safe, supportive environment.

Here’s how a coaching partnership with me can support your journey:

Awareness: Together, we identify the hidden emotional clutter and baggage that is weighing you down.

Processing: I provide guidance to help you fully process your emotions instead of suppressing them.

Compassion: I offer the toolkit for you to cultivate self-compassion, a key part of emotional clearing and healing

Release: We will work to release the old and often limiting beliefs and emotional pain, making room for clarity and new opportunities. ?

Just like decluttering your home creates space for new energy and ideas, emotional clearing opens ups possibilities for greater peace, clarity and joy, free from the weight of past wounds.
