In this episode, Harold Reitman, M.D. speaks with returning guest Lori Butts, J.D., Ph.D., the president and director of the Clinical & Forensic Institute, and previous president of the Florida Psychological Association. She is one of the few psychologists with her doctorate degree in psychology and also a law degree, and has extensive experience treating patients that have Autism, Bipolar Disorder, depression, and many other conditions that fall under the umbrella of neurodiversity. Dr. Butts discusses the importance of focusing on symptoms instead of labels, the stigma attributed to mental health care, and the myth that mental illness increases the likelihood of violent crime.

8 年I enjoyed the thought processes presented and agree completely. I have very rarely spoken of the challenges and costs associated with that which I have to deal. I have also never noted that I have a "governmental" defined anything I deal with as a disability. It costs too much to do so... from the perspective of people "moving back," treating me differently, or costing money both from a governmental perspective by restricting me from doing certain things, preventing job offers, and importantly absolutely enormous increases with insurance costs. I don't want hand outs, I just want the same opportunities. Add that to age discrimination and it becomes even more enjoyable trying to have a "normal" life and livelihood.

8 年It is great to hear the word 'symptoms' again... I can't remember the last time a Doctor asked me what 'symptoms' I have just before a tonic clonic seizure!' Everyone's symptoms are so different depending on what type of epilepsy one has!
