Moving ahead while holding onto what you have
Metallica's new podcast 'The Metallica podcast' just dropped. The first episode delves into their history and formation. Here's something lead singer James Hetfield says about those days:
"We lost a few friends in the early days because of our drive"
Initial founders James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were looking for musicians who shared their drive and ferocity. And not everyone fit the bill when it came to that. This meant a few people were disappointed.
Over time, we outgrow people, cultures, ways of working, and certain types of work itself. And this creates a tug of war within us.
Should I hang out with this person even though I can't relate to them anymore?
Should I pursue this line of work even if it no longer gives me joy?
Should I continue to work in cultures that wear me down, even though I've done it all these years?
Sometimes, what you want is in conflict with the people you're with or the career you're pursuing.
It's near impossible to move forward and hold onto some vestige of the past at the same time.
