Movie Discovery: Only The Brave by Henry Castel

Currently, California is being hit by an important wave of heat. Some cities reach the incredible rate of 100F. This is insane. One of the consequences is wildfire. To plug in with this actuality, I have decided to discuss an interesting movie focused on firefighters. The name of the film is “Only The Brave.” My choice comes at a time when Northern California is being ravaged by one of the deadliest fires in the State's history. The film offers a glimpse into the work of these men and women who risk their lives to help the population. In the era of superhero movies, it honors these heroes of everyday life.

Let's dive in.

Like every year, Arizona is ravaged by forest fires that are decimating the region. Only firefighters certified "hotshots" have the opportunity to get as close as possible to the enemy to fight it. The term "hotshot" is usually reserved for special units of the Forest Service. The Granite Mountain team brought to the screen was just a group of local firefighters that Eric Marsh, the chief of a local fire station, played by Josh Brolin, dreamed of turning into an elite team. This was never the case, but through years of training and sacrifice, they had become the first certified municipal hotshot team in the United States. This designation will help protect the Town of Prescott and their families.

On a sweltering morning in June 2013, an elite Arizona fire unit went to the town of Yarnell Hill, some 135 km northwest of Phoenix, Arizona, where a fire was raging. The fire started by lightning on June 28, 2013.

Two days later, Chief Eric Marsh, who had 20 years of experience, tried in vain to reach a safe site, but the flames, fanned by a wind that suddenly changed direction, progressed faster than expected, blocking the escape route of the 19 firefighters. They are trapped. They then deployed their fire protection but succumbed to the intense heat.

The sole survivor of the tragedy, Brendan McDonough played by Miles Teller, kept watch while his teammates went to the front. After alerting them to the change in wind direction, he quickly moved away from the area.

The film depicts the choice and consequences of the life of a firefighter, the atmosphere of the fire station, punctuated by dangerous missions, exhausting training, the omnipresence of this family that we choose, and whose schedule we adopt, often to the detriment of blood families. It is by touching this spirit of camaraderie, the cheeky jokes, the evenings with families but also the couples' arguments, and the quarrels between brothers in combat that the film captures with rare accuracy the commitment and accurately symbolizes the sacrifice of its men.

?

The movie is 100% approved; you need to watch it. This is a true story and you'll discover how a fire station works. As a leader or manager, you'll find the characteristics required to work as a successful team such as hard work, trust, training, motivation, common values, goals, and perseverance. However, failure can happen with dramatic consequences.
