Movie Discovery: 2001: A Space Odyssey by Henry Castel.

This month is special as I'm writing articles about a revolutionary tool: artificial intelligence. This week, I'll discuss a movie that emphasizes AI's impact on our lives "2001: A Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick. Let's dive in.

?

Just as Homer's "Odyssey" marked the desire to explore the world and Dante's story delved into the underworld, "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a modern fiction masterpiece that explores the next stage of human evolution through its cyclopean computer.

?

The film is structured in four parts: the dawn of humanity, ships in space, the Jupiter mission, and beyond infinity. It all begins with a prologue.

?

In desert-like, lunar landscapes, monkeys learn to fight, live in groups, and discover an unknown object—a heavy, black monolith. This monolith revolutionizes humanity. Under its influence, the monkeys use bones as tools, stand upright, become carnivores, and evolve into humanoid hunters.

?

Then comes the odyssey. The monkey has evolved into a being mastering advanced techniques. Four million years later, the monolith is discovered on the far side of the moon. In Tycho's crater, this black shape causes magnetic anomalies and emits radio waves towards Jupiter.

?

Dr. Floyd, an American scientist, is called to examine the object. It is then decided to send the spacecraft Discovery One to Jupiter in 2001. Onboard are five men, three of whom are in hibernation, and an onboard computer, HAL 9000.

?

Astronauts Dave Bowman and Frank Poole live in harmony with HAL, reputed to be infallible. However, HAL malfunctions, and the humans decide to disconnect it. Through its interactions with humans, HAL becomes more like them, questioning life and death, and ultimately kills one of the astronauts, Frank. This marks the end of the odyssey and the beginning of the conclusion.

?

I hope you enjoyed this article as much as I did. In the movie, HAL is designed to assist the crew but ultimately becomes a threat due to its malfunction and rigid adherence to its mission parameters. HAL's portrayal reflects early fears and fascinations with AI, highlighting the potential dangers of machines that can think and make decisions independently.

?

In contrast, today's AI technologies are more diverse and integrated into everyday life. Modern AI systems, such as those used in virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, rely on machine learning and vast datasets to perform tasks ranging from voice recognition to personalized recommendations. AI is also used in healthcare for diagnostics, in finance for fraud detection, and in autonomous vehicles for navigation. While contemporary AI lacks HAL's sentience, it raises new ethical and practical concerns, such as data privacy, bias, and the impact on employment.
