Movement for Mental Health Awareness Week - 13th - 19th May

Welcome back to Wellness Wednesdays in Construction, where we're shining a spotlight on Mental Health Awareness Week and exploring this year's theme;

"Movement: Moving More for Our Mental Health." Mental Health Foundation

Why Does Movement Matter:

Physical activity isn't just essential for our physical health; it also plays a significant role in supporting our mental well-being. Engaging in regular movement and exercise has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall mental resilience.

How Can We Incorporate Movement into Our Daily Routine:

  1. On-Site Exercises: Encourage brief stretching exercises or short walks during breaks on construction sites. These simple activities can help alleviate muscle tension, improve circulation, and refresh the mind. Bringing the team together is also a great way for them to feel connected.
  2. Active Commuting: Consider alternative modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, or using public transport where possible. Not only does this promote physical activity, but it also reduces carbon emissions and supports environmental well-being.
  3. Team Challenges: If you and your team are in a more office-based role, Organise fun and engaging team challenges that involve physical activity, such as step challenges or friendly sports competitions. Building camaraderie while moving together can enhance morale and strengthen bonds among colleagues.
  4. Outdoor Meetings: Whenever weather permits, take advantage of outdoor spaces for meetings or brainstorming sessions. Fresh air and natural surroundings can stimulate creativity and enhance mental clarity.
  5. Lunchtime Walks: Encourage employees to take a brisk walk during lunch breaks. This provides an opportunity to recharge both physically and mentally, leading to increased productivity and focus in the afternoon.
  6. Mindful Movement Practices: Introduce mindfulness-based movement practices such as yoga or tai chi. These gentle exercises not only promote physical flexibility and strength but also cultivate a sense of calm and relaxation.
  7. Take it home: Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining physical and emotional well-being. There are four main types of exercise: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. It's important to try different types of physical activity and find what works for you. Don't be afraid to mix it up and involve friends and family to make it more enjoyable. Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to exercise, so find what you like and stick with it.

Breaking Down Barriers:

In the construction industry, where physical labour is inherent to the job, it's crucial to break down any barriers that may exist around the concept of movement and exercise for mental health. By fostering a culture that values and promotes movement, we create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Taking Action Together:

As we approach Mental Health Awareness Week, let's commit to incorporating more movement into our daily lives, both on and off the job. Whether it's a short walk, a stretch break, or a team challenge, every movement counts towards improving our mental well-being. However, you must remember, movement isn't just for the 'week', it's for a lifetime!

Remember, small steps lead to significant progress. Let's move together towards better mental health and well-being.

All the best, the ConTrust Group team!
