'Movember Update - Mental Health of Men - How you can help
There have been many great ‘Mo’s in history. From Tom Selleck, Eddie Murphy, Rollie Fingers, Ron Burgundy to Frank Zappa. They may have been before their time, but who will you channel for your inner ‘Mo as we round the ? way point to raising funds for Men’s health.
Team Arbela wants to thank all those who have made the commitment to Move, Donate or make their own personal commitments.
This week we want to talk and share a bit about the Men’s mental health. From a personal level I have had 3 male friends ended up ending their own life. So this email we hope to provide some guidelines on how to have a conversation with other men who may be struggling mentally. This isn’t something men are taught to do very well so we hope these simple guidelines provide some education.
Helping a friend is as easy as these 4 steps:
- ASK– mention anything you have noticed that’s different. “You’ve not quite seemed yourself recently. Are you okay?” Remember we often say “I’m fine” when we’re not!
- LISTEN – Give your full attention without interruptions. Let him know you’re all ears without judgement. “That can’t be easy. How long have you felt that way?”
- ENCOURAGE ACTION – Help them focus on simple things, sleep, exercise, eating well Suggest he tells others he trusts how he’s feeling. If he’s felt low for more than 2 weeks – suggest he sees a doctor.
- CHECK IN – Suggest a catchup soon. Can’t meet up, make time for a call, drop him a message. Show you care. If you have a concern about someone’s life – go to emergency services.
