Move and Groove #21 - Trust
Do you trust by default or does someone have to earn your trust? Regardless of your personal approach, trust amplifies the ability of a team to do their best work.
Trust isn't just a value listed on the wall but a lived experience by every team member. Trust begins with confidence in one another's capabilities and intentions and is enhanced or degraded by one's self-centeredness. When you focus on the team and the work, trust goes up. When you focus on "what's in it for me?" trust goes down. High trust environments are amazing to work in - information flows freely, ideas are shared without hesitation, and innovation isn’t stifled by fear of judgment. This isn't an imaginary scenario but a practical approach to building a high-performing team where trust leads to better results and higher satisfaction.
David Maister, Robert Galford, and Charles Green created this useful trustworthy formula in their book, The Trusted Advisor. It looks like this... Where can you improve your trustworthiness?
Neuroscience Nugget: Trust in the workplace influences brain chemistry, particularly the release of oxytocin, known to enhance group dynamics and cooperation. Oxytocin increases trust among individuals, leading to greater collaboration and success in group tasks (Kosfeld et al., 2005) and is also necessary for Group Flow. This hormonal interaction not only helps in building bonding but also significantly enhances collective problem-solving abilities.
Pep Talk: As we launch into this week, take a moment to reflect on how you can foster trust within your team. How can you increase credibility, reliability, and intimacy while reducing self-orientation?
Cultivate trust, unlock potential, and see you next Monday! ??????
