Mourning Tesla

After 6 years of working at a company I loved so much, I'm grieving. My outlook is 100% positive, but it's a huge loss.

It's important to mourn losses, to pay respect to the past. Our relationships with the things we love, especially with eras of our lives, don't end when we move on, they only change. Now Tesla is an era of my career, not my current job. The chapter is written, set in stone forever, and the pages of the chapter I'm on haven't been written yet. Time to get to work.

The life of the frozen past carries on, by becoming the source of meaning for our future actions. If I honor my Tesla experience and use it as inspiration for helping others - even one person - my relationship with Tesla won't just continue to live, it will thrive and flourish.

In my last year at Tesla, I did a lot more hiring and people management. My role became to recruit amazing people, inspire them, teach them my ways, and turn them loose to destroy. In the pareto of leadership, the 5% of action driving 95% of success is conceiving and constantly articulating a compelling vision. This drives energy, enthusiasm, and purpose, without which teams can't persist and win in the face of extreme challenges. Elon does this for the whole world.

So in the last months I began to crystalize, write down, and instruct my teams and others in my Tesla-intensity project management ways. Before last weekend, most people I talked to at Tesla saw a lot of value in my advice; I'm willing to bet they'll still see it now.

I'm mourning my people and my past, by making meaning from my Tesla experience, and offering it to you. I hope you will benefit.

I'm looking at my past 6 years and reflecting like it's the end of a Television show and the series finale shows everyone's growth. How I laughed and cried smiled and met some of the most beautiful and intelligent people I was privileged to know and work with. So now into a new show pilot.

My love, I am very proud of you. You certainly did a great job and many people are proud of you too, after all it was 6 years in this company that made your career take off. You will definitely fly even higher and just like you found Tesla, you will find another brilliant company for you to shine with and even better. God's plans are always bigger and better than ours. I love you infinitely! ????
