"Mourning Hair" Blog #51: The Sleep Unicorn

PEOPLE... 3 AM... In a galaxy far far away, when I lived in the city, 3 AM used to be a song that I belted out at the top of my lungs, in a bar, and the time I rolled into my house after a long night out, not the time I rolled out of my bed to start my day. The sleep unicorn; I've been chasing you for so long now. Sleep; it is a biological requirement and one that eludes me on a regular basis. I must hear, at least once a day, when does she sleep? My husband usually answers, "she doesn't". I like to sleep. I fall asleep. I just don't stay asleep! I'm tired, period.

I grew up with a mother that was always up at the crack of dawn! She worked non-stop; always hustling. When I say hustling the woman worked two, sometimes three jobs, and was always donating her time or services. She never relaxed, or at least I don't remember her doing so. It was a great example to set for a daughter. I will say I am exactly like her now. I do continue to grapple with the notion of learned or innate behaviors, but in either case, I can't be idle and I have the work ethic of an ox.

Is it normal to get up in the middle of the night and want to go to work? Maybe there should be "middle of the night" clubs, for people that can't sleep? Maybe I should call a local diner, one that is 24 hours, and see if I can set up a "Sleep Unicorn" group? The worst part is that I can't even do the chores around my house because I will make too much noise. I don't want to wake the rest of my slumbering family. Why ruin their joy of sleep!

I have tried oils, teas, melatonin, and stretching. I am open to any suggestions... Oh, and if anyone would like to start a club with me I am available from the hours of 2:00 am to 6:00 am!
