The mountains are calling, and I must ... Oh! I wait, I am already here!

Here in the Western Mountains of Maine, nature's playground unfurls before me - sun-drenched and tree-shaded hiking trails, mirror-like lakes begging for a paddle's caress, and, on sultry days, the irresistible allure of a refreshing swim. Festivals dot the calendar, promising joy and community spirit. Amidst this bounty, I'll weave in some volunteer work, giving back to this slice of paradise I call home.
As night falls, the true magic begins, as this is dark-sky country. The pristine air gives way to a celestial tapestry—stars, planets, and satellites painting stories across the inky canvas. It's a humbling reminder of our place in the cosmos, a sight that never fails to inspire awe and wonder.
This summer, I urge you to disconnect to reconnect. Unplug from the digital noise and tune into the present moment. Your mental and physical well-being will thank you. Cherish time with loved ones, breathe deeply, and let the season's warmth melt away your stress. Remember, it's not just a suggestion, it's a necessity for your well-being.
Hurricane Season Reflection
As summer ushers in hurricane season, my thoughts turn to those affected by Hurricane Beryl in Texas. I pray that the power be swiftly restored and damages be minimal. Having weathered my share of hurricanes, I'm reminded of a powerful meditation technique that draws inspiration from these mighty storms.
Eye of the Hurricane: A Mindfulness Journey
Imagine your mind as a hurricane. Swirling thoughts and emotions are the turbulent winds, but at its core lies a calm center - the eye. This meditation, the 'Eye of the Hurricane ', uses your breath as an anchor, guiding you to that tranquil space within. Its power to bring calm amidst the storm of your thoughts is truly remarkable.
Focusing inward allows you to observe your experiences without getting swept away. This practice may unearth long-buried issues, offering a chance for conscious processing. The 'Eye of the Hurricane' meditation uses your breath as a guide, helping you navigate the storm of your mind and find the calm at its center. Remember, it might take a few attempts to fully grasp the metaphor.
Just so you know, if your mind wanders, gently return to your breath. Incorporate ambient sounds into your meditation—let even sirens or construction noises become part of your mindful awareness.
This meditation was created by Hugo Alberts (Ph.D.) and Lucinda Poole (Psy.D.).

After your practice, reflect:
- How did connecting with your observing self, the part of you that can step back and observe your thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them, feel?
- Did the hurricane metaphor resonate? If not, what imagery speaks to you?
- Did any suppressed thoughts or feelings surface? How did you navigate them?
In these turbulent times, finding your inner eye of calm is more crucial than ever. Let this meditation be your compass, guiding you to peace amidst life's storms.
??Thought until next time
"Summers had a logic all their own and they always brought something out in me. Summer was supposed to be about freedom and youth and no school and possibilities and adventure and exploration. Summer was a book of hope. That's why I loved and hated summers. Because they made me want to believe."― Benjamin Alire Sáenz
