Mountain Blue

Mountain Blue

Mountain Blue is a family-owned and operated company, established in 1978, that produces the highest quality berries and genetics, along with an extensive nursery and marketing service.

Over the years, Mountain Blue has steadily expanded, with over 200 hectares of commercial blueberry plantings spread across farms in New South Wales & Queensland, as well as Australia’s largest commercial nursery and berry breeding programs that span across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania intending to provide premium berries 12 months of the year.

Underpinning everything that Mountain Blue has achieved is Ridley’s continuous aim for improvement. Be it the berry flavour, texture, timing, or size of berries – his focus has to lead to an internationally recognised Blueberry breeding program for Low Chill and High Chill varieties.

The Bell Family is laced within the business, with Ridley’s son Andrew now overseeing the company and Ridley leading the team through research and development. A key milestone of this research has been the development of the ‘Eureka’ variety in 2008. Since this breakthrough, Mountain Blue has continued to improve on Eureka and is now producing bigger and better-tasting varieties faster.

Mountain Blue has a vision - To be the leading global producer of exceptional berries, through premium genetics, cutting-edge nurseries and holistic marketing services.

Through this pursuit of excellence, the company operates in an ethical and sustainable manner to ensure that farming, genetics and nursery practices are ethically sourced and gentle on the environment.

The company seeks to improve sustainability through innovative production practices, mechanization, and variety improvements, ensuring farms growth and future generations health and well-being.

Mountain blue is a people focused company that affords teams a secure and meaningful environment, whilst providing a platform to give back to the local and international communities the company operates in. Understanding the importance of education, health and well-being, Mountain blue has forged strong partnerships with community networks and global non-for-profit agencies.

Through this network the company provides access to facilities, education on health as well as resources, to ensure healthy happy futures. It aims for excellence in every part of the business, from farm to the consumer.

200ha is a good number for blueberry farming, particularly when soil is chosen as substrate, in tandem with inoculation to raise the carbon biomass for exceptional nutrient density. This is a great choice as opposed to the raising by peats approach that may require further efforts to reach similar nutrition goals, although I have seen otherwise. The pride then lies in the legacy. Ultimately, bottom line matters, regardless of berry size, since consume seldom distinguish one berry to the next by size, perhaps only by taste. This also explain increasing number of blueblerry farm owners asking for Mr Carbon and Baby, the only ppm enzyme based biotech in the AG sector today that speed up plant metabolism by acting directly on the rhizosphere in the soil. Also works great through foliar application on a weekly basis. In two weeks, we make a bowing blue berry plant stand upright. This is not surprising as the native organic recipe stands at pH 5.3, just about the sweet spot for blueberries. As with all blue berry farm owners, they wanted solutions the day before and chose air cargo as new normal in blocks of 10 pallets. Time is money, farmer knows best.
