Mount Maunganui is my HOW!
That's the beautiful view from the Mount below over the Easter break!
That pic was taken by the husband who reached the summit!
I did not make it to the summit for the SECOND time...
The first time I looked at the Mount was exactly this time last year and we were out with a bunch of friends with varying levels of fitness. At the time I did not think I was in particularly bad shape however sitting on the chair and being inactive during COVID did me no favors. I was panting within the first 5 minutes, could hear my heart pounding out of my chest, sweating and my legs giving away. No amount of motivation was working and within the next 15 minutes I gave up. I wanted to go down and was the only one who did NOT climb to that summit!
I had promised myself that I will climb up to the top in a year, so I strategically planned Tauranga this year to give myself that chance to redeem. On the D-day day, I woke up feeling energetic and particularly positive since I had been active and taking care of my fitness levels however as soon as I saw the mountain from afar – my heart sank. That feeling of giving up even before trying started riling up.

I managed to walk almost to the top before giving up – contemplating it hard and long and then just giving it up.?My husband kept muttering my mind over matter, and you can do it however I did not want to DO IT!! I was 15 minutes shy of reaching the summit and decided to come down because those 15 minutes were testing and taunting me, and I was not doing well at all. I descended the mountain and sat below it while my partner reached the top.
At the bottom, I could feel the pangs of regret, and only if I had held on, persevered for some more time – I could have finished it, however, I still have to conquer it and maybe in the next 6 months, I will give it a go again! Life, like my failed hike, tests us, puts us in a situation where patience is essential and only if we hold on… however, it also means you can learn from your failures and try again!
Honestly, the path to the top is your journey and how you reach is important not when!! So like me – keep looking for the HOW and try again!
