Mount Everest: Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the First Confirmed Summit

The 1953 Mount Everest Expedition, led by John Hunt, was the ninth mountaineering expedition to attempt the first ascent of Mount Everest, and the first confirmed to have succeeded when Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the 8,848 summit on 29 May 1953.

The legacy of that first ascent is evident in the interest that it continues to generate across the globe seventy years on, inspiring generations of mountaineers and adventurers over the last seven decades.

Since 1953, it is estimated that there have been over 11,000 successful summits of the world's highest mountain, including a number of Bremont Ambassadors, with some having recently summited Mount Everest ahead of the 70th anniversary of the first confirmed successful climb.

Kenton Cool

Bremont Ambassador Kenton Cool is a British mountaineer and mountain guide, who this month summited Everest for an incredible 17th time. This sees Kenton break his own record for the most successful Mount Everest climbs by a non-Nepali.

Kenton was first introduced to mountaineering when he read about Hillary and Norgay's 1953 ascent of Mount Everest and has gone on to extensively climb all over the globe, having successfully completed more than 44 expeditions and set new mountaineering records, including becoming the first person in history to complete the 'Everest Triple Crown', the peaks of Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse in one continuous push from base camp.

Aldo Kane

Bremont Ambassador and record-breaking extreme adventurer Aldo Kane successfully summited Everest on the 16th of May, and then went on to summit Lhotse almost 24 hours later.

"I had wanted to Climb Mount Everest since I was a little boy. I read so many accounts of the mountain but never had the time or resources to make it happen. This season, at the age of 45 and 70 years since the first successful summit, I had the time, resources and support that I needed to stand on top of the world. None of it possible without my sherpa support. The true heroes of the mountains." - Aldo Kane
