Motivation is the desire or willingness to do a certain task, whereas competency is the ability to do a certain task successfully and efficiently. Sometimes, a person’s motivation and competency can vary depending on their given task. For every combination of motivation and competency (MOTIVENCE?) must be addressed in different ways.
Usually, an individual’s competency is easier to measure, while measuring their motivation can be more challenging. Measuring competency begins by seeing the person’s experience on a certain task and the result of it. To measure motivation, the leader has to use empathy and see how they react to the given assignment.
As a leader, it is important for you to be able to analyze your subordinates’ motivation and their competency when assigning them with tasks, and practice applying the right leadership style accordingly.
