Motivational Monday - The past is your training
"The past is just training, it doesn't define you. Think about what went wrong but, only in terms of how you will make sure the next time you will get it right. " -Jeff Haden
The other day I was reading from The Daily Stoic By Ryan Holiday, and he had a very good point about finding the right mentors for life. -As an I earn from qualifying purchases.-
A lot of people feel they were not given a great hand in life, and have been dealt a serious blow to their success, or that their past is haunting them and holding them back.
We hear this mindset all the time!
But Ryan makes some wonderful counterpoints to this idea on his June 7th reading:
"We are fortunate enough that some of the greatest men and women in history have recorded their wisdom (and folly) in books and journals... The literature availabe at your average library amounts to... thousands of years of knowledge, insight, and experience." (Holiday, p 173)
Wow! That is a powerful idea and a powerful mindset, one I have taken seriously since I was 14 years old reading The Proverbs daily.
It is a powerful mindset I would encourage you to take on.
A person might not have what they need at the moment to succeed, but this doesn't mean they can't get better; their past doesn't determine their future!
When we cultivate a mindset that we can figure life out, we can learn, and we are not doomed to where we are, this will separate us from others and put us on a path to success. He goes on to say:
"Maybe your parents were poor roles models, or you lacked a great mentor. Yet if we choose to, we can easily access the wisdom of those who came before us..." (Holiday, p 173)
Don't let your past define you. Maybe life has not been perfect for you, or you have had many failures. It doesn't mean you can't get up, dust yourself off, change, get better, and go on to succeed!
Getting better
