In a recent article I read about the plague of cynicism, it was reported the 30% of Americans believe that “most people can be trusted”. It was further reported that “nearly 60% of people across 27 countries said their default is to distrust others”. Organizations may see symptoms like selfishness, greed, dishonesty, mediocre performance, over-managing, zero-sum leadership, burnout, turnover, cheating, gossip, and backstabbing. In organizations like this motivation is stifled and there is little to no incentive to set goals for personal improvement. Most people will merely acknowledge that it is what it is, and continue to allow hopelessness to seep in.??
"People set goals that are embedded in their purpose."
?In contrast organizations that invest in their people and create a safe work environment will experience collaboration, teamwork, trust, faith, innovation, hope, autonomy, accountability, strong communication, proficiency, continuous improvement, purpose driven behavior, happiness, health, and high performing individuals and teams. Motivation in organizations like this is off the charts. People set goals that are embedded in their purpose. They are energized and motivated to go to work building a place that they believe is committed to them and their personal future.??

?Maintaining organizations where people feel motivated is a process. It is most definitely not won and done. It is a struggle. In a world where “it takes 2.94 positives to neutralize 1 negative thought” it takes work to steer your path away from the path of least resistance. When “close to 80% of what we consume on a daily basis is negative” deliberate practice, deliberate action is needed to combat the tidal wave that faces us every day.??

Invest in yourself! Taking time to marinade in your personal purpose, set goals, evaluate, and track your progress is massive. You need to be the first investor in your personal journey. You need to own your journey! Surrounding yourself with those that share your common goals and values is huge. We become the product of the people we spend time together with most. You need to choose the people you want to be like most. You need to choose the values you want to cultivate and seek out people and organizations that share these values.??

Do the work! When we have a clear objective and we have chosen to do the work in breaking that objective down into bite size tasks that are easy to manage and execute, we have placed ourselves in a position to win. This process has proven results in protecting and maintaining motivation.
In conclusion: Protect your organization against cynicism. Seek out people and organization that foster trust, faith in each other, and hope in a brighter future. Invest in yourself! Do the work! ?
