The Motivation Equation: Why You Never Feel Accomplished

The Motivation Equation: Why You Never Feel Accomplished

Do you ever feel like no matter how much you achieve, it’s never enough? Like your progress is invisible or unimportant, and the mountain of unfinished goals keeps growing? If so, you’re not alone—and the issue isn’t your effort or ambition. The real challenge lies in how your mind processes progress.

Here’s the truth: your mind often devalues what you’ve already accomplished. If you don’t learn to recognize this pattern, it will keep you stuck in a cycle of frustration, making it nearly impossible to sustain motivation or feel a sense of accomplishment.

Why Motivation Feels So Hard

Your brain operates on what I call the Motivation Equation:

Motivation = Perceived Progress ÷ Total Goals

Notice the key word: perceived. It’s not about how much progress you’ve made—it’s about how much progress your mind allows you to see.

The problem? For many of us, our minds are wired to devalue progress. You might finish a task but think, "It’s not enough." Or you might make strides toward a goal and immediately dismiss it as insignificant because there’s still so much more to do.

This mental habit creates two major problems:

  1. You’ll never feel accomplished. No matter how much you do, it will always feel like it’s “not enough.”
  2. Your motivation will drain over time. Without perceiving progress, your brain doesn’t release the dopamine that fuels sustained effort.

The Key: Observe and Interrupt the Pattern

The most important step is to simply watch your mind. Notice when you’re devaluing your progress. For example:

  • You tell yourself, “Sure, I did that, but it’s not a big deal.”
  • You focus entirely on what’s left to do instead of what’s already done.
  • You assume progress doesn’t count unless it’s perfect or complete.

Each time you catch these thoughts, remind yourself: If I keep devaluing progress, I will never feel motivated or accomplished.

A Simple Practice for Sustainable Motivation

Here’s how you can start shifting your mindset today:

  1. Pause and Observe Your mind, when it tries to devalue your progress, tries to move on from any accomplishment or task completion quickly by adding more work on. This is a recipe for feeling drained.
  2. Focus on Progress Instead of all the things left to do, focus your thoughts and attention on what has been done. Try to have a sense of accomplishment and hold this feeling for longer than you normally would.
  3. Simplify Your Goals The more goals you juggle, the harder it is to see meaningful progress. Prioritize one or two goals at a time to make your progress more visible and manageable. I like the idea of winning the day by having one task that, if you complete, you can consider the day productive.

The Takeaway

Sustainable motivation doesn’t come from working harder or achieving more. It comes from retraining your mind to notice and value the progress you’re already making.

If you don’t watch your mind and interrupt the habit of devaluing progress, you’ll always feel like you’re falling short. But when you start observing this pattern and shifting your focus, you’ll find a sense of accomplishment that fuels your motivation and keeps you moving forward.
