Motivation is BullS#it! Why There's Nothing Wrong With You

If you want to insult me, introduce me as a motivational speaker!

After reading this article, you'll understand why...

What do you associate with the word motivation?

Is it some over-caffeinated speaker in a blue suit wearing a red tie screaming "Yes, you can!" like a possessed lunatic? Or maybe it's a video where Dave Goggins (or someone similar) is doing what seems impossible while the theme from "Rocky" plays in the background?

It's easy to watch/listen to these things and want to throw in the towel and tell ourselves that we're just not motivated. But that is NOT true; what is true is that motivation is BullShit, and I'll prove it!

Motivation is often cited as how people achieve their goals. It's drilled into us, and it's become the way we see things coming to fruition. When someone achieves something, we might ask, "What motivates you?" Therefore, not getting things done is seen as a lack of motivation. In conversations like this, "I haven't done it." "You need to get motivated" is a typical response, but that response is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

The traditional concept of motivation is entirely overrated, misleading, and scientifically out of touch. It's time to shed light on its limitations and embrace a more nuanced understanding.

Now, you may be asking, "Why"?

The Tiny Habenula (The Motivational kill switch)

Enter the 'Neuro-Saboteur!

In your brain, a tiny gland called the 'habenula' makes any lack of motivation make complete sense when you understand its functions. This unassuming organ is the real reason your motivation to do something can sink like a torpedoed battleship in the blink of an eye.

Let's investigate its role in controlling your brain's expectations and failures. Understanding Motivation.

Understanding Motivation

Typically, motivation is viewed as the catalyst for action, the spark needed to initiate and maintain our goals. But you may have noticed that this spark is notoriously fickle, and its reliance can often lead to disappointment, unmet goals, and feeling like there's something wrong with you... But there's not!

The Role of the Habenula

The habenula monitors our failures and successes. It's particularly active when we encounter negative experiences or outcomes. Its main job is protection, and it does this by teaching us what to avoid in the future.

The Myth of Sustained Motivation

Despite popular belief, motivation is not a constant. It ebbs and flows, and relying on it for long-term goals can be like building a house on sand—unstable and unreliable.

Identifying and Hugging Your Neuro-Saboteur

The habenula is your neuro-saboteur; it can subtly undermine your efforts by enhancing the emotional impact of failure, thereby discouraging repeated attempts after initial setbacks.

The Science Behind the Sabotage

That fear of failure you may sometimes encounter is the habenula. Studies have shown that the habenula's activity increases when individuals face repeated disappointments, effectively reducing motivation. This response is in place to help you avoid harmful behaviors, but the huge downside is that it's extremely detrimental to your personal growth. You see, most lasting personal growth comes from the learning encountered during or after experiencing a failure.

Rethinking Motivation: A Neurological Perspective

Neuroscience sincerely challenges the way we have seen motivation and, for that matter, why it can be so challenging for some people to be or stay motivated. However, what is clear is that neuroscience offers a more stable foundation for understanding human behavior than traditional motivational theories. By understanding how the brain works, we can develop more effective strategies.

Strategies to Bypass the Neuro-Saboteur

Habit formation, incremental progress, and cognitive restructuring can effectively overcome self-sabotaging behaviors. These approaches create new neural pathways and reinforce positive behaviors over time.

Understanding the Psychology of Self-Sabotage:

Self-sabotage is a complex psychological phenomenon influenced by various factors, including cognitive patterns, emotional regulation, and past experiences. By understanding these underlying mechanisms, individuals can develop more effective strategies for change.

The Anatomy of Meaning: Making Friends With the Neuro-Sabotuer

Research has shown that reevaluating subjective meaning impacts habenula activity and associated motivational states.

As I mentioned, the habenula plays a crucial role in processing disappointment and regulating motivation.?By reexamining and reevaluating experiences and revising subjective value, we can modulate habenula activity and overcome demotivation.

A key concept relevant to this topic is the subjective theory of value, which proposes that an object or experience's worth is not fixed but rather fluctuates based on context and individual perception.?

By purposefully reevaluating the meaning and value we assign to experiences, especially perceived failures or disappointments, we can shift our emotional and motivational responses and, in turn, prevent the habenula from hijacking our drive.

Challenges and Considerations

Dealing with the habenula has its challenges. It requires persistence and an understanding that setbacks are part of the journey.

Conclusion

Understanding the role of the habenula in motivation reveals why relying solely on motivation is a waste of time, energy, and effort for most of us. Reevaluating "meaning," specifically the anatomy of meaning we carry about an experience and what it says about us, can be transformative!

Three key actions you can take to rethink motivation and embrace the role of the "Neuro-Saboteur":

  1. Practice Mindful Awareness: Begin by observing your reactions to failures or setbacks. Instead of beating yourself up when things don't go as planned, take a moment to understand the emotional responses triggered by the habenula. Remember, the habenula is trying to keep you safe. Use mindful awareness to assist you in recognizing patterns and reducing their control over your actions and emotions.
  2. Establish Small, Achievable Goals: Instead of setting large, daunting goals that rely heavily on fluctuating motivation, break them into smaller, manageable tasks. Train yourself to celebrate each small victory, as this incremental progress can bypass the habenula's discouraging effects and build a sustainable path toward your larger goals.
  3. Examine The Anatomy of Meaning: This is the most important thing you can do to manage the Habenula! Every time you face a disappointment, actively question the meaning you are giving that experience. Instead of saying to yourself "Why did this happen to me?" Ask yourself, "What can I learn from this?" By actively shifting how you interpret failures, you effectively change the subjective meaning and value assigned to these experiences, which can help modulate the habenula's influence on your motivation.

By incorporating these actions into your daily life, you empower yourself to work with your brain's natural processes, not against them, leading to more consistent and effective personal growth.
