Johnny Lever was born as John Prakasa Rao Janumala on August 14, 1957, in a poor Telugu Christian family in Andhra Pradesh. His father was a tailor and his mother was a housewife. He had 11 siblings and they lived in a slum in Mumbai. He dropped out of school after the seventh grade and started working odd jobs to support his family. He sold pens on the streets, worked as a waiter, and even performed stand-up comedy in musical shows.
He got his first break in Bollywood when he impressed the actor Sunil Dutt with his mimicry skills at a charity event. Sunil Dutt gave him a role in his film Dard Ka Rishta (1982). He then joined the famous Kalyanji-Anandji music group and toured with them as a comedian. He also performed in television shows like Zabaan Sambhalke and Hum Paanch.
He rose to fame with his hilarious performance in Baazigar (1993), where he played the role of Babulal, a bumbling housekeeper. He became a household name with his comic timing and expressions. He went on to act in many hit films like Raja Hindustani, Judaai, Deewana Mastana, Dulhe Raja, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Golmaal 3. He also starred in his own television show, Johny Aala Re.
