When I recently discovered the Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) statistics that…

1)????Automobiles account for the largest number of accidental deaths for people under the age of 34.

2)????Large trucks & buses involved in injury crashes increased from 2013 to 2014 by 21 percent, from 73,000 to 88,000, of which 3,744 were involved in fatal crashes.

And furthermore, that many of these accidents were preventable crashes resulting from unsafe driver behavior-- handling and focus behaviors corresponding to acceleration or speeding, swerving or jerking, hard braking or fast turning, and distracted driving.

… I thought, we need to do something about this!

Self-parking / Self-braking / Self-driving "Smart Vehicles" Sound Great.?Contextual Driver Behavior Feedback That Can Save Lives Right Now… Sounds Even Better.

With the growth of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), big data, algorithmic science, machine learning, many companies are actively working on autonomous vehicles (self-driving cars and trucks) as well as assisted driving technologies.?

This is fantastic and exciting.?Experts are saying that we will see these autonomous vehicles regularly on the roads in the next two decades.

But in the interim, there must be a simple-to-adopt solution moving beyond the vehicle itself, to assist and support mastering decision processes driving behavior.

We need feedback tools that go beyond the basic “drivers ed” classes teens take or “commercial classroom and road training” drivers take to handle commercial and fleet vehicles, that are fundamentally transitory.?

We need something to monitor and provided feedback to improve driving skills, knowledge, and behavior.

We need to act swiftly to save more lives-the facts are incontrovertible:

·???????There are over 5 million vehicle accidents per year in the U.S. alone.?

·???????2015 the U.S. 35,092 people were killed in crashes, an increase from 2014.

·???????The 7.2% increase is the largest percentage increase in nearly 50 years.

·???????#1 cause of death 15-24-year-old, driving accidents.

·???????#2 cause of death 25-34-year-old, driving accidents.

Extrapolate that, it’s evident driving safely is a worldwide problem.

Why do we put up with this??Driving accidents don’t have to be the norm.?

People are getting hurt and losing valuable time.

People are also dying; no one wants to die.?

Come on, we can do better!?

We now have the technology, literally in our hands, to support changing behavior to produce different outcomes.

Do you think you are an excellent driver??Maybe, maybe not.

Honestly, it depends on location, context, distractions, and driving behavior.

That’s a huge part of the solution, behavior change.?

Behavior change?refers to the transformation or modification of human?behavior.

How can someone modify or acclimate driving behavior??

What is “excellent” driving??And what “needs improvement”??

Specifically, if you don’t know what you need to focus on adapting, expressly within your population of other drivers for your regional location/context (weather, topography, etc.) because you have no benchmark or indication, then where do you begin?

Transportation is part of almost every aspect of life – yet we monitor and analyze less than 1% of all drives today. This is due to the lack of solutions that integrate well into our daily lives and work on a mass scale.

Fortunately, several very intelligent data scientists and engineers have been coding for the past three years creating a behavior data processing and analytics platform that builds on advanced techniques from artificial intelligence, signal processing, biometrics, and machine learning to overcome this problem by developing a “contextual driving score” (a simple, easy to use feedback tool).

We now can make roads safer, commutes less stressful, and transportation more efficient and cost-effective through mass-scale driving behavior analytics. Better data yields more optimal decisions.

This new “driver scoring behavior analytics” tool is now fully commercialized, scalable and ready to ramp.?Now it needs to be made readily available to the masses.?

Analyze specific event is one thing and its good for immediate feedback. But analytics on the mass gives a perspective on the overall strategy required, e.g. Change roads structure, change traffic signs and traffic light timing, plan cars different, etc.

Driver scores are a good start. Most bad drivers are likely to have bad scores with too many hard acceleration and braking events. The difficulty is in coaching for improvement based on a score -- what were they doing wrong and why. What was the root cause of an exceptional event, was it because the driver was distracted by their cellphone, or because another driver swung in front of their vehicle? The only way to know the root cause is to have video. This is the Lytx DriveCam business - driver behavior change based on event recorders that can assert the root cause of an exceptional event.
