Mothers, Nurses and the World

Mothers, Nurses and the World

The American Nurses Society, a professional organization that advocates for nurses and nursing, states, 'Nursing can be described as both an art and a science.' This statement has resonated with me throughout my career, reminding me of the unique blend of knowledge and compassion that defines nursing.

The International Council of Nursing states, "Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings."

As I have spent the week reflecting on my experiences as a nurse, I see nursing as the soul of humanity. It's not just a profession but a journey of personal growth and learning that has shaped me into the person I am today.

I have had the joy and pleasure of working with so many nurses throughout my career. I have taught nurses, trained nurses, led nurses, mentored nurses, coached nurses, and worked beside nurses from all backgrounds, specialties, practice sites, and cultures. What a beautiful experience that has been.??

I have had the privilege of crossing paths with some exceptional nurses who have left an indelible mark on my life and career. Each one brought their unique qualities and contributions, making a significant impact that I will forever cherish.

On my first trip to Saudi Arabia, I worked with a team of incredible nurses with a heart for improving care and keeping patients safe.? Val, Pauline, Helen, Lavonna, Diane, Deanne, Tara, and many others helped me navigate my way around my first international experience.? These nurses came from around the world to care for people from other countries.? They gave their hearts and souls to help people who looked different, worshipped differently, and spoke different languages.? This experience broadened my understanding of nursing and reinforced the universality of our profession.??

When I went to Dubai to open a clinic, I had the honor of working with one of the most outstanding nurse leaders I have ever met. Ann is a brilliant mind who speaks, writes, lobbies for, and loves nurses. She showed me what a great nurse leader is and supported me through countless challenges as we built the clinic. From navigating cultural differences to managing a diverse team, we faced numerous obstacles. But with Ann's guidance and our shared commitment to nursing, we overcame them all.

The team of nurses who came to Dubai to work in the clinic were, quite honestly, the best nurses I have ever worked with. They had extraordinary clinical skills and, more importantly, kind, caring, and generous hearts. Cher, Hannah, Hailey, Susie, Maarit, Katerina, and others became lifelong friends who made my nurse leadership job so easy and so much fun. If there was ever a magical moment in my career, this was definitely it! I am forever grateful for their dedication and friendship.

In Abu Dhabi, the 150 nurses I had the privilege of leading showed me the importance of kindness. The team came from countries worldwide and had a toxic leader for years, severely damaging that team's morale. With the help of great nurses like Cheryl and Tamara, we turned the operation around. We developed new team leaders who have enjoyed great success.??

The biggest lesson I have learned in my career is to be a leader who leads with love.? When people feel loved, they can accomplish great things. I have loved leading and working with these amazing people and will be forever grateful for the fantastic opportunities I have had. This lesson has not only shaped my leadership style but also my approach to patient care, reminding me of the importance of empathy and compassion in nursing.??

Lastly, these stories couldn't be written without my mom, the first nurse to encourage me in this career. In honor of Mother's Day and International Nurse's Day, I send my gratitude, respect, appreciation, and love to all the nurses who have supported, cheered, cheered, and loved me throughout my career. And to my mom, thanks for all you have done to get me here!!
