Mother's Day - Courageous Mums are Our World

Today is Mother’s Day! To all the incredible mums and guardians out there - thank you for your incredible courage, kindness, love and leadership. It’s time to celebrate and honour mothers and maternal figures for all they do for us. However, we should remember to appreciate and value mothers and the important women in our lives every day.?

Mothers are some of the most courageous people we know. The unconditional love and pride they have for their children and the way they shape and define their families is incomparable. Whether it’s your mother, grandmother, a favourite aunt, teacher, or friend, the women in our lives shape and define us in ways both large and small. Mothers pass on their gifts of courage and kindness to their children.

Mothers have been called the glue that holds the family together, although the glue is often under appreciated. Celebrating Mother’s Day by acknowledging the woman who gets it all done not only provides a lift to her spirits, it helps to unify the family unit by pulling us together in a way that Sunday evening dinner does not. The celebration of Mother’s Day allows us to reflect on who we want to be as a family and how we’re all connected to one another—a gift a mother is sure to appreciate no matter how it’s packaged.

5 Things Motherhood Taught Me About Leadership

No one is ever really 100% prepared for motherhood. You can read hundreds of books and talk to all the mothers you know, but until you experience it for yourself, you’ll never fully know what it’s like. Becoming a mother gives you new experiences and teaches you things that are unique to the crazy journey that is motherhood.

If I hadn’t given birth to my amazing daughter Abby, I would have missed out on knowing what pure and complete love is - and I never would have learned so many valuable lessons that make me a better mother, and a better leader too!

So many of the traits and skills we learn as mothers and practice every day can translate into powerful leadership lessons, and help us improve ourselves as leaders.

Here are 5 of the most important leadership lessons I’ve learned since I became a mum:

One size doesn’t fit all

Just as each child is unique in what their strengths are, what motivates them and what approaches they respond best to, so are the people in our teams.

Taking the time to get to know those you work with not only helps you get the best out of them, but it also improves your relationships, leading to better and more open communication.
