Motherhood or Career, or may be both?
The obligation of a working mom is a very precise one. The feeling that one ought to work as if one did not have children, while raising one’s children as if one did not have a job.
The rush of married women into the workforce runs against traditional thinking that women must choose between family and careers as housework is still considered the woman's domain. Working women shoulder additional responsibility of the work place as well as at their domestic front. Thankfully I am blessed with a progressive family support mechanism but that’s not true in most of the cases!
It's the quintessential double bind that sets the stage for the epic battle so many women in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have waged.
Allow me to take you through my story briefly, started working at the age of 23 right after graduating with a rewarding and fulfilling job, tied knots with my partner in midst of the same job. Marriage of course gave a new kick start of life, exciting and thrilling. Few years later decide to bring a new life on this planet, this was the time I decided to take a break due to some medical conditions (very unusual for Indian Corporate Setup though). A blessed angel happened to us who choose us as parents. Career 2.0 started after a more than a year or so.

I never thought it would be so different this time. A constant juggle between reproving myself at workplace and mentally/emotionally satisfy myself that I am good and smart mother too above all. Uff it really took few months to master the art of not feeling guilty subduing your motherhood of over your career!
As on day when I writing this, I strongly feel motherhood has indeed made me a better and a more responsible professional overtime as now I have an engaging purpose to work for!
And as they say - Someday you will wake up and your house will be clean, but your baby will be all grown up and on their own, so enjoy the mess and the kids. They are only babies once!
PS: Penning this down when my toddler is taking her afternoon nap!
