Constant education and improvement are some of the most important aspects for anyone looking for growth and success. Even more so for public adjusters.
Let us rewind the clock to around ten years ago.?
Public adjusters often had a hard time growing and learning the ins and outs of the trade because there weren’t any educational platforms.
Essentially, the only way to learn was by trial and error or with a mentor and finding a mentor was tough, I mean really tough.
At least, that was the situation when I started as a public adjuster.
Now, you have many restoration experts sharing their experience and knowledge on social media and blogging platforms.
In fact, Advocates United in Miami 2022 was the largest educational and inspirational event ever for public adjusters.
This week's blog is brought to you by?Black diamond housing services
Here’s what you missed if you didn’t join us there:
?? Short tips about the importance of professionalism in communication with the insurance adjuster.?
?? How the restoration industry should join forces to fight the insurance companies.?
?? And how the insurances attempt to reduce our influence over the homeowners.
At the event, speakers shared their experiences and educated the attendees about various aspects of the restoration industry.
And in this blog post, we will dive a little deeper into some of the ideas from the event and expand them into actionable steps you can implement on your next claim.
The Importance of Professional Communication for Public Adjusters
Steve Patrick shared some excellent advice on using questions to control the conversation. Controlled and professional communication is an excellent asset to all public adjusters.
One of the many things you can learn from our?public adjusting handbook?is how to communicate with the client and the insurance company.
The first part of effective communication for public adjusters is to ask questions.
Ask the homeowner questions. Interview them about the damage that happened. Because, in reality, they are probably the only eye witness of the event.
The homeowner can tell you all about the damages, the date of loss, whether or not they repaired anything, what else happened, etc.
You should use that information in your letter to the insurance company.?
You should also?ask questions to the insurance adjuster. Ask them to go over the policy so you are both aware of how the insurance explains the policy.?
Ask the desk adjuster about the number of insurers, does the policy cover living expenses, what about the contents, etc.

Secondly, be friendly and professional.
You are only giving more reasons to the clients and the insurance agency to portray us badly in the media if you are constantly brawling and arguing with the insurance adjusters.
Be professional, ask detailed questions about the damages, and do not argue with them. Even if they start throwing insults at you.
The best thing you can do is to document their misconduct and present it if you ever go to litigation.?
But stay professional at all times.
Invest in Your Public Image
Lawyer Brit talked about branding at our Advocates United gathering in Miami.?
The restoration industry is still lagging behind many other industries when it comes to business owners presenting themselves online and using the available resources for branding and online marketing.
Investing in a public image is crucial for public adjusters because of two main reasons:
Look at what happens if you don’t.
The insurance companies use their resources to bash the whole public adjusting industry on large media channels because of the unethical behavior of a few bad apples.
If you are unprofessional or unethical, they can use that against everyone. Plus, policyholders lose trust in us and what we can do on their side.
So, invest in your public image, and use social media to promote the benefits of your work, and the work that all public adjusters do.
Additionally, use social media to share the misconduct that insurance companies often do.
It will help you gain more prospects, and it will help the industry in the fight against insurance companies.
Find Ways to Improve Your Public Adjusting Skills
Becoming a great public adjuster means mastering the policy, knowing what you can include in the estimate, and becoming a skilled communicator.
It takes communication skills to be professional at every encounter with the insurance adjusters. It also takes skills to convince the policy owners to sign.
The best way forward to grow as a public adjuster is to keep up with the insurance companies and their policies and educate yourself on other business aspects.
Educate yourself constantly.?Use available online material, like?our video courses, and find ways to implement what you learn into your claim process.
The more up-to-date you are with the insurance policy and the claim process, the faster you can resolve the issues.
This means the client gets paid faster, and you get paid faster.
