Most 'startup-friendly’ city in the world?
???? Japan has big plans of making Tokyo the world’s biggest startup market in the coming years, with a goal of increasing the launch of new unicorn firms (valued at over $1 billion) and businesses by tenfold over 5 years.
?? According to CB Insights, there were about 1,200 unicorn firms around the world as of October, but Japan only had six, including five in Tokyo.
?? The capital plans to boost the number of joint programs with the private sector. In the US, for example, NASA’s procurement from private firms has bolstered the growth of space-tech startups such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
?? The government’s five-year startup policy proposal announced last Thursday revealed its plan to increase startup investment to ¥10 trillion by the fiscal year beginning April 2027, and create a ‘global startup campus’. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has also set boosting startups as one of his top economic objectives under his so-called new form of capitalism.
Is this a sign of big economic changes that are about to happen in Japan?
