#1. Estimate the number of WhatsApp chats occurring in India.

Population and Internet Penetration:

• India’s total population is approximately 1.4 billion.
• With 80% internet penetration, that gives us 1.12 billion people who are connected to the internet.

Smartphone Penetration:

• Of the internet-connected population, around 90% use smartphones, which results in 1 billion smartphone users.

Urban vs. Rural Split:

• Based on demographics, 40% of the population is urban and 60% is rural.
• In urban areas, I assumed 100% of smartphone users are using WhatsApp.
• In rural areas, I assumed 70% of smartphone users are using WhatsApp.

Total WhatsApp Users:

• In urban areas:40% of 1 billion smartphone users = 0.4 billion (400 million).Since 100% of urban smartphone users use WhatsApp, that gives us 400 million WhatsApp users in urban areas.
• In rural areas:60% of 1 billion smartphone users = 0.6 billion (600 million).Of these, 70% use WhatsApp, which gives us 420 million WhatsApp users in rural areas.

#2. Design a gaming product for Meta customers.

Clarify scope or make assumptions

1. Assume gaming product can be on web or mobile app.
2. Assume that the gaming product is created on one of Meta platforms and not spinning up an entirely new website or app to create this gaming product.

Goal

1. Advance Meta’s mission of empowering users to build community, foster connections and social interactions.

Target Audience

1. Focus on young adults and adult gamers as they are more the target audience and can help Meta increase engagement with platforms.?

• Focusing on retired senior gamers will allow Meta to address a market that maybe historically has not been power users of social media platforms or power gamers.
• Focusing on young adult gamers will allow Meta to gain marketshare against competitors like Tiktok and Snapchat
• Focusing on adult gamers will give the Meta platforms more utility for the adult gamers who probably only use Instagram or Facebook to connect with users.?

#3. How do you go about calculating the TAM, SAM and Target Market for the food tech industry?

Clarifying Questions

I’d like to first ask some clarifying questions if I were being asked by a live interviewer:

• Are we interested in the global food tech industry or specific market?
• Are we interested in foodtech for humans or for pets as well?
• When we say “foodtech” what types of products are we considering? I assume products and services like delivery food services (doordash, uber), meal kit apps (Hellofresh), subscription food boxes (humans and pets) and in the kitchen tech appliances (smart refrigerator, smart rice cooker, and even oculus products that aid you in cooking virtually). Am I right??
• What about technology that is being advanced in terms of making the food? I heard some months back, that there is this company that is making great strides in biochemically manufacturing the first ever vegan steak that tastes and looks exactly like steak. Are we considering this market too??
• TAM is total addressable market. SAM is serviceable addressable market. What do we mean when we say “target market”? I assume we are talking about serviceable obtainable market. (SOM)
• For the TAM, SAM and SOM, what time period are we considering?

What We Know

Unfortunately we don’t have any of the above information so I will do the calculations based on the information I do know:
