Most Promising Solutions for Managing Used Nuclear Fuel

Continuing our three-part series on nuclear energy with Neil Alexander from the Canadian Nuclear Society on the critical component that often stirs debate and curiosity. The radioactive goop -- as told to us by the media and otherwise known in the industry as nuclear fuel. We cover the following --

?? Main Lessons & Ideas:

  • Nuclear Fuel 101: Did you know that nuclear fuel starts as a metal called uranium? It's not the "goop" you might have imagined, but rather tiny pellets stacked in rods, powering our reactors with natural uranium, just like what's found in the earth.
  • Safe Handling: After lighting up our lives, used nuclear fuel is highly radioactive, but fear not! It's carefully cooled in water pools and managed without harming the environment or people. And there's a plan for its future, too—think long-term storage deep underground.
  • Recycling Potential: Imagine squeezing out every last drop of energy! That's the vision for recycling used fuel, and experts like Neil are diving deep into research to make this a reality.

?? Curiosities to Spark Your Interest:

  • Expert Insights: Neil isn't just any guest; he's a nuclear industry virtuoso with a resume that spans academia, leadership, and government consulting. His knowledge is a beacon for us all!
  • Environmental Guardianship: We're not just talking about nuclear energy; we're discussing our planet's future. It's about understanding our past actions and striving to do better for our Earth.
  • Innovations Ahead: Stay tuned for the next episode, where we'll explore cutting-edge innovations in the nuclear space. The future is bright, and we're just getting started!

I would like to know the total amount of water that is consumed by the nuclear industry in Canada on an annual basis - but it seems there is no answer to this question. Sustainability requires that we discuss impacts of this technology on other resources. Also, its typical for discussions about waste disposal to end up with burying the waste on Indigenous lands.
