  • Ventures & Products: The most promising area for AI led products

What impact area should we most anticipate the development of AI-led products in?

The correct answer is actually education. And this is a line we’ve likely all heard and delivered in discussions about the most practical and sustainable way to change the fortunes of as many people as possible, who make up economically vulnerable groups across the continent.

In Africa, millions lack access to quality education due to barriers like language diversity and situation in remote locations.?????For instance, UNESCO reports that over 50% of sub-Saharan African children can't read by age 10.

If it is this clear and evident, why then do challenges like limited access, language and literacy deficiency, and lack of learning infrastructure in remote regions still hinder progress in improving life outcomes for millions of people??????

More importantly, what promise does AI hold in transforming learning across the continent?

Big bets are on personalized learning, remote education, data insights, and teacher support, but these are just a few areas where AI can make a lasting impact.????

Some (potential) game-changer initiatives currently in play include M-Shule which uses AI to provide personalized learning via SMS, Schoot which serves as an afterschool curriculum supplement in the area of digital skills, while Rwanda's Smart Classroom Initiative integrates AI to uplift learning quality.

What does a collaboration to leverage AI's potential in tackling these challenges and providing equitable education opportunities across Africa look like to you???????Share your insights (in comments or here )

  • Digital Transformation: Learning from successes and failures

In the dynamic landscape of digital transformation, every journey is unique, filled with challenges and victories. It is important to share the valuable lessons learned from both failures and successes.

??We've heard the cautionary tales of ambitious digital endeavors that fell short of expectations. Companies who took the digital leap without proper planning, who invested hastily in the latest software and tools without assessing their actual needs and designing for alignment with business goals. Software compatibility issues here, data breaches there, added to overwhelmed employees to whom the overall vision was poorly communicated to.

In some other cases, companies didn’t take the leap when they should have. The Toys R’ Uses, JadoPados, and Nokias struggled to adapt to the rising digital landscape. Despite having a strong market presence, they failed to invest in e-commerce and digital customer experiences; or failed to scale due to ineffective digital strategies and technology investments, or were reluctant to embrace touchscreens and new operating systems.

These cases remind us that digital transformation is not just about technology, but also about aligning strategies, business goals, processes, and people- also reading the room. By analyzing these failures, we gain insights into the pitfalls to avoid, ensuring a more informed path forward.

??On the flip side, we have witnessed success stories of organizations that embraced digital transformation and reaped remarkable rewards.

The Majid Al Futtaims and Go-Jeks leveraged technological advancements to address unique needs and desires of their respective markets. These stories exemplify the benefits of embracing and effectively managing change, fostering innovation, and nurturing a culture of adaptability. Through these stories, we glean the essential ingredients for driving impactful transformation.

At Gumi & Company, we guide organizations through the intricacies of digital transformation. With a clear focus on tailored strategies, collaboration, and cost effectiveness, we empower businesses to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that this transformative journey brings.

We are always delighted to join you as you explore the landscape of digital transformation, bringing learnings from failures and successes to ensure you triumph in shaping your evolving digital future! ????

Career progression is usually inevitable and it often leads to being in charge of someone or someones at a point. Your perspective as a ‘follower’ should ideally go with you as you progress and serve as valuable insight for when you lead. Perspective and circumstances change as you (hopefully) go up, but the focus on enabling team performance and organizational success should not.

The thing is.. It's easy to criticize managers and leaders, within organizations and other contexts as well. It's also easy to say ‘if I were in their shoes, I would definitely not be like them’. However, the truth is that many people become the managers and leaders they feared. When it's their turn to lace up the proverbial shoes, their new path provides a view that they did not have in their former roles and without planning for it, they become the new big bad.

Before Zeus was established as the highest authority in Olympus, there was Uranus and Cronus. Uranus was ruler of the cosmos and the biggest guy in charge. He was also quite evil and set himself up for a rebellion by imprisoning the children of his wife, Gaia. Gaia wasn’t having it and long story short, she aided Cronos, his youngest son in overthrowing him. Cronos down the line however became afraid of his own children, fearing that they would do to him as he did his father so he swallowed his children whole as they were born. Only Zeus escaped because his mother hid him. Eventually Zeus would grow up to rally those who were swallowed or imprisoned by Cronos, after freeing them, and wage war against Cronos. This clash between titans and ‘younger’ gods is known as the titanomachy, and the gods won., The end.. Of the story as it relates to my point.
