So if someone was to say to you, in the 5th biggest economy in the world, the UK there is a place that is the most productive, even more productive than London one of the worlds great cities. Would you want to know more? It's the people stupid.
You would be more than curious I guess, and then if someone told you it had the most important data infrastructure in the world second only to Silicon Valley. Then we told you that the UK's most successful commercial property business was celebrating its 100 years of success there and they were in the two biggest growth markets in the world relating to data and consumption. Well you would go crazy, you would want a piece of that action. Wouldn't you? If not? why?
Then if I told you that a care company in that town was one of the fastest growing companies in the Thames Valley growing from 300 employees to 700 in 3 years and forecast to grow by another thousand and they were developing one of the most advanced ERP systems in the UK and they had saved the NHS £19 million you would want to at least understand what was in the water of that sort of place right.
Then I told you it was also the youngest place in the UK and it had among the best schooling in the country and it had 180 different languages spoken in those schools. By this time you would be going out of your mind.
Then I told you about this new start up business in the customer experience and technology realm based in that place. Set up by 3 millennial's born and bred there who had worked for some of the best businesses in the world and helped them create real value. That one of them was asked to evaluate a technology project that had already sunk £20 million without achieving its objectives and he suggested a solution that was a fraction of that to achieve the results and more. You would think there was something definitely in the water of that place.
Then someone shared with you examples of ordinary people from that place who had achieved and were achieving extraordinary things then that would be like you had struck gold. Like the elixir of life. I don't know why. I can give you some circumstantial stuff and some hypothesis but you will have to study it, research it, get the world to debate it and then get the world to try and replicate it. Because it's too important to ignore, right?
Here I am at 64 years of age about to enjoy my first leap year birthday for 4 years. I still enthuse for this place and everything in it. But now hooking up with these 3 millennial's is just on another level. In the last 3 months I have used business collaboration tools I had not even heard of, I have seen business methodologies such as strategic service design that is butting heads with 6 Sigma and I have seen up real close how these guys view the world.
Expectations set by Uber, Air BnB, Netflix, Ocado, Disney drive these guys to offering world class customer experience driven design and digital technology. It's not exceptional to them it's the standard.
They ask that people leave egos and politics at the door. They ask successful business people to hold onto their invaluable business knowledge and experience but trust the process. Trust the facts not your feelings. Because the Ubers and the Air BnB's won't wait, they will just disrupt and gobble you up. They already have!
They argue that you have to be innovating in house, not in a hidebound complex, difficult hierarchy of decision making way but resident agile entrepreneurs that will keep offering, keep challenging and make sure you can reinvent as fast as the market and your customers demand.
Watch this space, watch out for a whole generation of MAKE BELIEVERS coming after your business who want to work with you not for you. That will be the reality of millennial's everywhere, but it helps to be located in the most productive town in the UK, between the Thames Valley and London where the hungry, diverse and highly motivated reside to make the world a better place.
