The most popular artificial intelligence tools in 2023

Artificial intelligence has a breakthrough in 2023, with large language models (LLMs) and text-to-image generators attracting the attention of technologists and investors alike.

This visualization from the 2024 Global Forecast Series report uses data from Writerbuddy and Coatue to rank and visualize the most popular artificial intelligence tools of 2023, as well as the key recent adoption cycles of the technologies and software products that defined them.

Unsurprisingly, ChatGPT, the OpenAI product that sparked the AI boom in late 2022, is the most popular AI tool in 2023.

Following ChatGPT is another chatbot, CharacterAI, which is not a separate LLM for general and performance-related user queries, but a set of characters (also known as "dialog agents") that users can freely communicate with. These range from popular characters from TV shows and video games to dating coaches, interactive strategies, and text games.

Another writing tool, QuillBot , rounds out the top three most popular web AI products in 2023.

In addition to LLM, leading AI image generator Midjourney was the fourth most popular AI tool in 2023, followed by Hugging Face , an open source community that offers hundreds of unique AI models including LLMs, image generators, and other freely available AI tools.

I try to keep up with progress and actively explore AI tools, and some things really amaze me. Remember, it was out of shock that I bought Google. I'm convinced that AI today is literally a life-changing technology. But of course, there are concerns too, in case things don't go according to plan.
